HOW DO I GET AN E-BOOK AND READ IT?

System Requirements

  • Adobe Reader (version 6.0 or better)
To read the e-book on your computer, you must have the program Adobe Reader version 6.0 or newer. If you don't have Adobe Reader, or don't know if you have it, click below to download the latest version for free.
    Adobe Reader for PCs
    Adobe Reader for MACs

Extra note for PC Users: To run the right version of Adobe Reader, you'll have to have Windows2000 or newer on your computer — Windows98 won't work.

  • Storage Space on Your Hard Drive
An e-book can be anywhere from 2 to 6 mb (with the exception of the Microbial Balancing Program Manual which is 20 mb), and you'll need at least that much free space on your hard drive in order to download the e-book to your computer.
We understand that this "free space on your hard drive" lingo might not make a lick of sense to you. If that's the case, give us a call. Our numbers are at the bottom of the page.

How to Download an E-Book

When you've completed your purchase, a page will appear with the words "Order Summary" in the heading.
At the bottom of that Order Summary page is the heading for Digital Goods.

  • Click on the title of the e-book.

  • Another smaller window will appear ("pop up"). If it doesn't appear, see "Helpful Answer" 2 below.

  • Please read the message that appears in that new window. To proceed, you must scroll to the bottom of that page and click the "Accept" button.

  • When you click "Accept," your computer will most likely* bring up another window asking you whether to "Open with: ___" or "Save to Disk."
    * If it doesn't look like what we're describing and you don't know what to do, call us at 800-960-8806.

  • You must choose "Save to Disk." (See "Helpful Answers" 1, 3 & 4 below.)

  • The book will then download onto your computer. The file size can vary from 2mb to 20mb. Downloading will just take a few minutes on broadband or cable. Dial-up will take a bit longer — about 30 minutes for 2mb. If you're on dial-up, you may want to consider going do a different computer/device or connection to download your e-book.

  • When the download process is complete and the e-book is saved, you can open and read it. If you don't know how to do this, give us a call at 800-960-8806 and we'll talk you through it.

  • If you decide to print a copy, remember to choose color if you have a color printer. You'll appreciate the help the color gives when reading and using this book.

Helpful Answers to Frequent Questions About Downloading

  1. What does "Save to Disk" actually mean?
By clicking Save to Disk, your computer should open yet another window — this one will show where your files are in your computer (like "My Documents"). If you would like to view the file more than once, you should put it in one of those folders (and remember which folder you put it in!).

  2. Does your computer use a "pop-up" blocker?
If it does, make sure that's deactivated before you try to download the e-book. (If you don't know how to do this, you'll have to call your web browser's [Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.] tech support.)

  3. Why can't I just open it?
If you choose to open the file (without saving it), you'll only be able to see it once. And when you close the program, it will be gone, gone, gone.

  4. Can I save it to a CD instead of my hard drive?
No. The file is too large. It will "time out" and you'll lose the file.

  5. Can I view this on my MAC?
We recommend you use Adobe Reader, but you can view the e-book with Preview if you wish.

Technical Support — "Geek Girl" To the Rescue!

For those of you out there struggling with the technology of downloading — know that some of us on staff feel your pain! So, we tried to word our instructions to help people at all levels of computer use. Our sweet and savvy Geek Girl, who was a whiz at setting this e-book up for downloading, asked for help from us not-the-computer-whiz types to put the instructions in as plain English as we could. If it still doesn't make a lick of sense, we suggest calling on that totally computer savvy 8-year-old grandchild, niece, nephew, etc. (The youngin's can do this blindfolded, with one hand.) If you've got no kids nearby, just give our order line a call. We know that all computers are set up differently, and you could hit a glitch we haven't covered here. Really, don't hesitate to call us! We will do all we can to help you get your e-book.

1-800-960-8806 (Monday – Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. eastern)

You can also call our question line for help on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., eastern, at 1-540-937-3679.
