It's mid-August and we're coming up on that September 2008 time when I said that if the H5N1 bird flu virus had not broken out into a pandemic by then, I would exchange all the FSBS+ bottles you have on hand for the new 2008-09 Seasonal Flu Balancing Solution. However, the H5N1 virus is still a major threat and the World Health Organization is still cautioning that it can break out in a human-to-human pandemic at any time. The virus has mutated in several significant ways over the past two years and concern is as high among health officials now as it was in previous years. What a lot of people don't understand is that this virus is impossible to predict. Uganda: New Strain of Bird Flu Poses a Major Threat

"Scientists in Uganda and their colleagues elsewhere are worried that human beings could contract a new strain of bird flu.

"The acting World Health Organisation (WHO) Representative in Uganda, Dr Jean Baptiste Tapko, said a global state of alert to the pandemic influenza has been declared.

" 'Transmission of the influenza virus infection to humans has been mainly from infected birds,' Dr Tapko said. He was addressing a Kampala symposium that is drafting a code of ethics for pandemic influenza detection and response in Africa.

"Dr Tapko said the emergence of H5N1 strain of influenza virus would mark the beginning of an influenza pandemic.

"In 1918, an influenza pandemic caused up to 50 million deaths worldwide while in 1957 influenza claimed between one to two million lives. In 1968 the pandemic caused about 700,000 deaths worldwide.

"Dr Tapko said that since 2003, a total of 385 human cases and 243 deaths from infection with avian influenza sub-type H5N1 had been reported in 15 countries three of which are in Africa including Nigeria and Egypt.

"Unlike the previous pandemics, we have had the opportunity to see this one unfolding. We are all expected to be better prepared to rapidly contain and mitigate the possible impact of the pandemic," he said.

Dr Tapko said several countries including Uganda have developed and are implementing national multi-sectoral preparedness plans.

"The potential public health impact of an influenza pandemic is enormous including social and economic disruptions, travel and trade restrictions, that would result into massive economic loses, overburdening health care services that are already weak in most developing countries."

P.S. Several people have called us with concerns about conspiracy theories they've seen on the internet. It seems it's going around cyberspace that governments (the U.S. government included) have isolated H5N1 and plan to unleash it as a biological weapon, thus creating a pandemic. I'm not sure what such an action would gain any government since an H5N1 pandemic would become worldwide and devastate their own country. Anyway, people have contacted us with concerns and want to know my opinion. I have no information about any conspiracy and I'm not planning to put any effort into getting any information about this. The bottom line is that it doesn't matter how H5N1 goes pandemic. It will still present the same serious problems whether it was introduced by some nut ball as a biological weapon or by a duck. H5N1 is H5N1.
